Silent Voices is a collection of poems written by asylum seekers living in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland. The anthology is the result of poems written during workshops held by Gene Barry in his capacity as an art therapist and poet.

One Battle Won

Armed with pens we came

Brandishing dredged memories,

Lumps dancing in our hearts,

Our inners ducking and weaving.

In this nebulous darkness

We saw the Dalai Lama lead

Ann Frank’s hiding frame;

Held our tears.

We took a seat with Sigmund,

Smoked a pipe with Sitting Bull

And threw words and sentences,

Fired notions of understanding.

Spoke of hardship and pain

And  wrote of love and hope.
